5-Amino-1MQ Research

At a Glance

  • What it is: A small molecule (not a peptide) built to inhibit a specific enzyme, NNMT, involved in how fat cells regulate their own metabolism.
  • Researchers have studied it for: body weight and fat mass in diet-induced obese mice, alone and combined with a reduced-calorie diet.
  • Evidence level: Real animal data, no human trials. Two published mouse studies, both from the same research program.
  • The short version: 5-Amino-1MQ has real, published mouse data showing reduced body weight and fat mass in obesity models. None of it is human data. This is a research summary, not a reason to use anything.

5-Amino-1MQ is a lab-made small molecule designed to block an enzyme called NNMT (nicotinamide N-methyltransferase), found inside fat cells. Researchers became interested in NNMT because it appears to run in overdrive in obese fat tissue, and blocking it has been studied as a way to shift how those cells handle energy.

A quick note on framing. Both studies below were done in mice, not people. We cite that literature as research. None of it is a suggestion to use anything.

What researchers have studied

The founding mouse study (Biochemical Pharmacology, 2018). Researchers gave 5-Amino-1MQ to diet-induced obese mice over 11 days, three times a day. Compared with untreated mice, the treated group showed lower body weight and less white fat mass. PMID 29155147. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29155147/

Combined with a reduced-calorie diet (Scientific Reports, 2021). A follow-up study tested 5-Amino-1MQ alongside a reduced-calorie diet in obese mice, compared with diet alone. The combination group lost more weight (6.3 grams versus 2.9 grams) and much more fat mass (about 29% versus about 3%), moving closer to a lean body composition, with better liver health markers too. How it works

Fat cells contain an enzyme, NNMT, that uses up a molecule called SAM as part of its normal job. In obese fat tissue, NNMT activity is reported to run higher than normal, and researchers have linked that to fat cells storing energy rather than burning it. 5-Amino-1MQ is built to get inside cells and block NNMT directly, which in the studies above was linked to less fat storage and more fat loss in obese mice.

What the research does not establish

Read this part twice. The honest limits matter more than the headlines.

  • There are no published human trials of 5-Amino-1MQ. Everything here is mouse research.
  • Mouse obesity studies are a standard research tool, but they don’t reliably predict what happens in people, at what amount, or over what timeframe.
  • The NNMT mechanism is an active area of research, backed by the animal data above, not a settled finding about human metabolism.
  • This page is a research summary only. It does not say the compound does anything “for you.”
