About P21

P21 is a synthetic peptide derived from a region of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF). It was developed as a research tool for studying neurogenesis and cognitive enhancement in preclinical models. P21 retains the neurogenic activity of CNTF without binding to the CNTF receptor, allowing researchers to study downstream neurotrophic effects more selectively.

Research Applications

P21 has been studied primarily in rodent cognitive models. Reported findings include increased BDNF expression in hippocampal tissue, enhanced neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus, and improved performance on standardized memory tasks. The peptide crosses the blood-brain barrier in animal models, making it relevant for CNS research.

For in vitro research use only. Not for human or veterinary use, therapeutic, or diagnostic purposes.

Research at a Glance
  • What it is: A small synthetic peptide, four amino acids long, modeled on a piece of a natural nerve-growth signal called CNTF and first pulled out of the mix in Cerebrolysin.
  • Researchers have studied it for: new nerve-cell growth (neurogenesis), memory in aging and Alzheimer-model mice, and tau and amyloid changes in those same models.
  • Evidence level: Preclinical only. Cell dishes and mice. No published human trials.
  • The short version: Researchers built P21 to copy part of a natural nerve-growth signal, then ran it through mice and cell models. In those models they watched for more new neurons, more BDNF, and better memory scores. The human case has not been tested. This is a summary of research, not a description of what P21 does for you.
